Johannesburg – Tshepisong Taxi drivers, in collaboration with the Doljota Taxi Association, are on a mission to ensure safety in the taxi industry. This after shocking news of a taxi driver and passengers shot by an armed robber pretending to be a passenger emerged.

This is an initiative that seeks to fight crimes taking place in taxi ranks and within the industry, amongst drivers. These taxi crimes have almost become a habit.

The taxi association has vowed that they will do whatever it takes to ensure safety in the taxi industry.

Representatives from the association will now be searching every passenger before traveling, to ensure that no one is in possession of any weapon. This will be done on a daily basis with the hope of eradicating such crimes and resurrecting trust.

“It is our duty to ensure that our industry is safe for anyone using it, we cannot allow such things to affect our services” said Sipho, who is a taxi driver and one of the patrollers.

“This brings great joy to us knowing that these taxi’s are considering our safety and not turning a blind eye,” one passenger who asked to remain anonymous added.
